Research into websites.

http://home.live.com/

On this Webpage we can visibly see what type of target Audience it is particularly aiming at - 18 - 30+ the reason for this is the layout of the page and the content it holds e.g. a Calender which can be edited so the user can organise his annual plans in it. Children younger than 18 don't really need this item because they have a more routine life where in businesses (work) you have to be places etc.
A Primary Navigation menu can be located at the top of the page giving the options of Home (Homepage), Profile (Giving a description of the user), People (allowing the user to interact with other users via email sending Interacive items e.g. movies, animations, or word based documents. Mail, Photos and More. - All of these are highly important for the user so this is why it'll be at the top of the page so it's the first thing seen making the layout of the webpage easier to navigate through. If the Menu was at the bottom the user would get confused/frustrated and simply leave because they have had to think, users want it simple very bread and butter for them to understand.
Secondary Navigation sources are on the homepage which will branch of to another page which will have the desired content on the page for the user (aslong as they didn't missclick). Secondary Navigation menus are a good way of organising a page making sure it doesn't get to cluttered and inidated with shit that'll confuse the user.
Tertiary links are often smaller and less noticeable to a user e.g. weather checks, time etc.

A search bar can allows be found at the top right hand side of a page, This appears to be a standard setting for any website the websites i have seen this setting in tend to be Video Sites e.g. Youtube, dailymotion, BBC iplayer or even MSN Video.

A topic menu can be found just below pointing out key points for the website.

Google Add's are embedded into the HTML and give the user cookies so they can track what items e.g. -Fashion, toys, cars or Erotic content the viewer has been looking at. With this information they will then select websites which you are most likely to click on and purchase giving them money.
